PORTLAND CEMENT
Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world, used as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and most non-specialty grout.
It is a fine powder produced by heating materials in a kiln to form what is called clinker, grinding the clinker, and adding small amounts of other materials.
Several types of Portland cement are available with the most common being called ordinary Portland cement (OPC) which is grey in color, but a white Portland cement is also available.
Application

- Actually cement is nothing but a normal paste or binder.. there is a setting time of a cement .. time of every cement varies depending on the GYPSUM used. In the most general sense of the word, a cement is a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together. The word cement traces to the Romans, who used the term opus caementicium to describe masonry which resembled concrete and was made from crushed rock with burnt lime as binder. The volcanic ash and pulverized brick additives which were added to the burnt lime to obtain a hydraulic binder were later referred to as cementum, cimentum, c?ment and cement.
- Q:The wind knocked over part of our wood fence. Two of the wood posts that were cemented into the dirt were uprooted. I figure the best way to fix the fence would be to use new posts (or bust off the old cement) and bury them in the ground with fresh cement. I'm feeling lazy and wonder if I do as good of a job just burying the old posts with the old cement back into the ground. Will it hold? Maybe this is a no-brainer for some folks - useful comments appreciated.
- Plywood will rot. Build a form out of 2 X 4's or 2 X 6's around the whole thing and then put an inch cap over the whole thing. Then this in turn will fill the hole and you will have a nice flat surface. If you want to patch it you have to take the old concrete out that is lose all the way to the subgrade then pour a patch but doing this you will still allow a small seam to allow moistuire to get in if it freezes it will pop it up. So the best thing to do is to add a lip of one inch above the whole thing. You will also have to break lose any loose concret e and remove before doing the whole lip. Also put a broom finish on top and this will allow moisture to run off of the concrete.

Now a days the use of Resin based cements are on the rise as they are easy to handle , create a good seal and also have fluoride action as mentioned previously. - Q:Last week before the St. Pete Indy race here in Florida an oil tanker crashed killing the 47yr old driver on the freeway overpass. The fire was reported to have exposed the original frame. Do u feel it was bad building codes that were passed long ago, bypassed? Did the cement melt?In need of a brainiac please.TY
- The heat from the fire caused the concrete encasement of the steel to expand, crack and fall off, exposing the frame. I doubt the temperatures reached were high enough to melt the concrete, you'd be talking volcano like temperatures.

- Q:i needed regrouting done on the paved edges of my swimming pool, the guy i hired done the job but he didn't clean the pavers afterwards properly so now there's a very slight film of cement grouting washed over the pavers - it makes them look slightly powdery. He said it would wash away but since then there's been heavy rain a few times but it still hasn't come off. What do you suggest i do to remove that residue? I thought about hydrochloric acid but I was worried it might damage the natural sheen in the pavers? what do you think...............
