Q:I have been wanting a new pair of hiking boots, but haven't had the money. I just got a job that requires me to have steel toed boots. The job is only for a few weeks, but I may be required to wear them on other jobs in the future. Regardless of which style I get, I will most likely be buying Red Wing boots. On their website, I see they have steel toed hiking boots. What is the purpose of a steel toed hiking boot? Why would a hiker need to have steel toed boots? Wouldn't that just be more weight? I see that some of their hiking boots have aluminum toes, claiming to be 33% lighter than steel with the same protection. Would these boots be good potential hiking boots as well as suitable for construction or should I just focus on work boots and buy myself some hiking boots at a later date?

Q:Can I ever get my classical guitar reinforced so it can have steel strings on it?
It would work out easier to just get a new guitar.
Q:I bought a Remington 870 super mag last fall and wanted to to switch to non-tox steel loads. The gun came with a modified rem choke. I know that not all chokes are qualified to handle steel. It doesn't say anywhere on the choke no steel I was just wondering if anyone out there knew for sure that those chokes that the guns come with won't get damaged be steel.

Q:I also heard Stainless holds up better againts rust, blue steel needs more care.
They have different properties. Bluing on steel is a surface treatment that helps inhibit rust, but doesn't prevent it. It will wear off with use over time, but can be redone. Stainless steel refers to a particular type of steel alloy, usually incorporating nickel and chromium, that is highly resistant to rust on its own, so doesn't need a surface treatment. Because the steel itself is what is rust resistant, that property can't wear off. All other things held equal, the carbon steel that bluing is typically applied to tends to be slightly more rigid and brittle than stainless steel. It may hold an edge better than stainless. In most applications, those differences are small enough not to matter for practical purposes. For example, both knives and guns are made with blued steel and stainless steel. Which a person gets is usually a matter of preference (unless you're, say, a professional restaurant chef whose knives have to hold a fine edge through constant hard use).
Q:Is there a chemical that can be applied (spraid, brushed, adhere) to a steel surface to decrease the heat conductive properties of the metal (so it doesn't heat up as quickly)? Thanks in advance!
There is, but I don't know what it is made out of. It is probably some fireproof, foam material which acts like insulation. I doubt it is designed to resist abrasion however. Most things which adhere to metal surfaces are not flameproof, and those which do resist fire are not good insulators. For example, the ceramic coating of appliances like stoves and washing machines adhere very well and are fire resistant, but do not insulate. It was the failure of the steel insulation which caused the collapse of the world trade centers. The impact of the airplane tore away all the insulation on the supporting struts of the building and then the fire caused the steel to soften and break. Steel was once insulated by wrapping it in asbestos cloth and then applying plaster over this to form a shell. It did not actually adhere to the steel but it did insulate it, and was fireproof. However asbestos is a cancer hazard and a lot of old buildings are being stripped of their asbestos as a safety precaution. The asbestos can be replaced with fiberglass which is usually duct taped together.
Q:Where are the coils and the steel plates used? Where did the steel plate come from?
Steel coil is a kind of steel plate, also known as coil. The coil, like toilet paper, can roll into a barrel. (describe not very appropriate)When the coil is used, it is necessary to use the Kaiping machine to expand into a flat plate.
Q:I need to penetrate steel on my car but don't know which bit to use. Are there special bits for steel?
Yes, they'll be marked HSS, High Speed Steel.
Q:I'm writing a story, and trying to find out how hot it needs to be for steel to turn into a gas.
Steel is to broad. There are many types of steel with different melting/boiling points. Iron* has a boiling point of 5182 °F and a Heat of vaporization of 340 kJ·mol?1. iron is the main ingredient of steel, along with carbon and other various elements.
Q:Can anyone tell me what that means. I have seen it on knife blades an such. I am assuming it's a formula for the strength of the metal. who does that scale work, and please keep it simple.
The number just indicates which class of steel alloy it belongs. Yours happens to be a 400 series and happens to have no Nickel in it (440 Steel) and a higher amount of carbon (Nickel is very common in steel) When I say alloy, I'm referring to the different chemical formulas and processing of steel which vary for different uses like industrial use, medical use or decorative use. Think of the different alloys like the types of soft drinks out there. Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper. They all have very similar chemical formulas; yet differ with their secret ingredients which is apparent in the taste.
Q:If steel content is too cheap, what content should I be looking for? I don't think I could find something like a VG-10 here...
Confusion Sucks. Why are you going into all this crap over the content of steel in the knives, your only confusing yourself. I recommend you go to a chef's supply or a good store that sells chef's utensil's and knows what he is talking about, and look at something that is comfortable for you. Chris
