- I carry a french knife that has been made the same way for 400 years , the manufacturer is called Opinel,...they fold up and are carbon steel and for what I do are very period correct for anything from 1700's through 1800's...any way they are very good and come in like 5 different sizes.... check and see if they have a web site....

- For steels with a four number code like 1020, 4140 ect the first two digits are the alloying information. I think you need to memorise those. 10 steels are plain carbon steel with no alloying. 41 steels are chrome-molly. The third and forth digits are the carbon content. 1020 is 0.2% Carbon, 4140 is 0.4% carbon. I don't know if there is a system to stainless steels.

- No. Carbon steel has two different crystal structures, FCC and BCC , depending on the temperature. when you heat steel up and then quench it, it locks the crystal structure into the BCC form. this makes it hard. whereas precipitation hardened austentic stainlesses remain BCC regardless of the temp, so the hardness change is not a function of thermally induced strain. you can anneal carbon steel but the thermal profile is closer to the precipitation profile of PH stainlesses than it is to the Solution annealing profile.

- Yes. Carbon steel is one of the most common metals used by human beings. When the Bronze Age ended and the Iron Age started, most of the iron humans could make was carbon steel. A Cast Iron frying pan is carbon steel (well... technically, there are differences between cast irons and steels but... anyway). Our cast iron frying pans (almost the only fry pans we have used for 30+ years) are mostly non-stick because we keep them well seasoned. Humans need iron in our diet anyway. You might want to check to verify what (if anything) it is coated with to make it Non-stick because, in general, steel cookware is stick. If it is coated with ceramic (enameled), then there won't be any rust because the iron is coated and protected from water. The non-stick ceramic coatings are very good. Ceramics are chemically inert to almost everything on earth (all but some of the most exotic chemicals you will ever find in a Chem Lab). As a side note... a large number of studies of industrial exposure to aluminum and aluminum compounds (people who work in Al production plants and are exposed to large quantities for years and years and years) has shown that there is NO correlation with Alzheimers or any other diseases. The major health risk for these populations was lung problems due to inhalation of fine dust (which, turned out, was not even as bad as breathing, for example, dust containing cotton fibers in garment workers).

- There is a chemical that is used presently that is sprayed onto steel beams called Monocoat. Its a form of insulation that gives steel protection for up to 2 hours I think. Hope that helps!
- Q:Will a stainless steel mesh screen scratch a titanium cup, or vice versa?I have a titanium french press and am thinking about replacing the included press with an all steel one. I am worried about little flakes of titanium or steel getting ground off into the coffee when the press slides in and out. The original press has a polyester cloth for a screen, so nothing scratches.

- You should not attempt to do any traditional welding of steel to aluminum as they can form a hard and brittle inter metallic compound known as iron aluminide. You would have to employ a process that did not melt either species. Cladding could be an option but you are kind of limited to flat products that are sandwiched together. There is also explosive which does almost the same thing as cladding. Friction stir welding might be possible but I cant vouch for that. The temperature does get pretty hot, so I am not sure what would happen. But any of these suggestions would take specialized equipment not available to the average user. For weight, Al is 2.7 g/cc and Iron is about 7.8 so it is about 3 times heavier for the same volume. How strong either of them are greatly depends on specific alloys and heat treatment. I think some of the strongest aluminum alloys have a yield strength of about 50,000 psi which would relate to a relatively weak steel. For steel, there are alloys that can have yield strengths in the hundreds of thousands psi.
