- Q:I am a complete idiot when it comes to anything musical, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question. I bought my son his first guitar, acoustic and didnt realize until after I purchased it that it has steel strings. Can I have the strings changed from steel to nylon???
- You can easily switch from steel to nylon strings or vice versa. You can buy the strings and string the guitar yourself or I'm sure you can get it done in any normal guitar shops. I've gone from nylon to steel and it hasn't affected my guitar at all. :D
- Q:I was wondering because i just watched an episode of build it bigger on the discovery channel about the uss George bush, and when they were discribing it they said it was 500 tons of steel and 47,000 tons of aluminum. this kinda struck me as odd because i thought that it was mostly made of steel. and i would think that even if it was mostly aluminum, that the hull would be steel. and i think the hull would weigh more than 500 tons.
- An aircraft carrier is a pretty large hunk of metal. And it's mostly steel... at least its structure and weight bearing surfaces. As I recall, there was quite a bit of aluminum and other light stuff used for cosmetic stuff, like covering on interior bulkheads (walls). But the flight deck is about three football fields of steel... thick steel. Planes landing on an aircraft carrier don't land. They are trapped when their tail hook grabs an arresting cable, and kind of fall out of the sky. When they hit, they need something pretty substantial to break the fall. - Stainless steel has some benefits: 1) Dishwasher safe: my anodized aluminum pots are NOT dishwasher safe (my wife put one in and it lost its gun-metal gray finish - sad) 2) Conductivity: most stainless steel cookware has an aluminum (or copper) middle - this transfers the heat nicely - steel by itself does not conduct heat evenly. All Clad cookware refers to the fact that the aluminum within the cookware is clad in steel. 3) Aesthetics: stainless is pretty. Stainless is not anti-stick, so you'll have to use all your skills to avoid sticking. 1) Use oil or butter: heat your pan before oiling. Once to temp, add the oil/butter and wait for it to heat-through. THEN add your food - sticking should be minimized. 2) Move your food around a lot: once you add a piece of food that is likely to stick, move it shortly afterward. This will prevent the food from gluing itself to one spot in the pan - a crust will start to appear, and that will protect the food from sticking. 3) Love the fond: anti-stick pans don't have a good chance at fond development (fond is the stuff that sticks to the bottom of the pan, and is crucial to pan sauce creation). You should experiment with your cookware, or send it to me: I am wishing for some new cookware.

- Nylon is allegedly better for beginners because they don't cut into the fingers as much. Steel sounds much better, though.

- Food sticks to stainless steel. Gourmet cooks love it for that very reason. Without sticking, foods won't sear properly. For the rest of those cooks out there, nonstick is often an easier option. If you want to make a go of the stainless, here are some tricks of the trade.... a)always preheat the pan on low-medium b)never put cold food into a hot pan. It will stick worse.Leave cold food on counter for 15 minutes before it hits the pan. c)after preheating the pan, add oil, or an oil/butter combo d)for foods like eggs, potatos, grilled cheese, nonstick is your best friend. e) when you take food out of pan, immediately wipe the pan out with a kitchen towel. Keeps cleanup from being a nightmare. f) don't wash pans in sink while hot. They will warp. Stainless takes some getting used to. Hope this helps!

- If you made up the right rigging you could probably suspend a Volkswagon with that, but certainly a refrigerator. It's flexible as steel goes - it's not rigid like tool steel, for instance. Since you ask about tempering and you are shopping at Home Depot, it should be just fine for a home project, if it looks like it will suit. Building a bridge or a machine tool, no.
